August is Black Business Month, a time to honor and support the vital role of Black-owned businesses. This month, we spotlight African American female entrepreneurs, celebrating their resilience and contributions to our economy.

Trailblazers in Business

From early trailblazers to modern leaders, African American women have made significant strides in business:

  • Madam C.J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, was America's first female self-made millionaire. In the early 1900s, she developed and marketed a line of beauty and hair products for Black women, laying a foundation for future generations.

  • Maggie Lena Walker broke barriers as the first female of any race to charter a bank in the United States. In 1903, she established the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in Richmond, Virginia, providing essential financial services to the Black community.

  • Oprah Winfrey, a modern media mogul, and Rosalind Brewer and Ursula Burns, corporate leaders, have each broken glass ceilings and showcased the diverse capabilities of Black women in America.

Despite facing systemic obstacles such as discriminatory laws and limited access to capital, these entrepreneurs have driven innovation and diversity within the marketplace.
