Women’s Equality Day: Empowering Black Women Entrepreneurs

Every year on August 26, we pause to recognize Women’s Equality Day—a day that marks the certification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, granting women the right to vote. It’s a moment to honor the progress women have made and to acknowledge the ongoing fight for equity in every space—from the ballot box to the boardroom.
But here’s the truth: for Black women, equality is still a journey. While Black women are starting businesses faster than nearly any other group, they remain the least funded. The resilience, creativity, and leadership of Black women entrepreneurs is undeniable—but access to capital and resources continues to lag far behind.
That’s exactly why the Women Lift Project exists.
We know that lifting up Black women business owners doesn’t just transform one business—it strengthens families, builds generational wealth, and shifts entire communities. We believe equity is not just about the right to vote; it’s about the right to build, to thrive, and to leave a legacy.
✨ On Women’s Equality Day, we recommit to our mission to expand the footprint of Michigan businesses owned by Black women. Through financial funding, opportunities, and education, our commitment is to help Black women have a greater impact in the world.
